about

Zdravets is the Bulgarian name for a wild mountain geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum) whose aromatic leaves stay fresh and green all winter. Zdravets is beloved by Bulgarians, to whom it symbolizes all that is healthy and long-lasting.

The Boston-based ensemble Zdravets has been performing music from Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia since 1989. The group has played for a wide variety of concerts, festivals, and folk dance events, ranging from the National Folklore Festival in Koprivsˇtitsa, Bulgaria, to livingrooms, backyard barbecues, and barn dances. Since the fall of 1997, Zdravets has been holding a regular monthly dance party and concert in Arlington, Massachusetts.

The dance music from this rich folk tradition features complex and exciting rhythms. The highly resonant vocal music is characterized by close harmonies and two-part singing, either in a single group or in two antiphonal groups. Zdravets primarily uses traditional instruments: kaval (end-blown flute), gâdulka (rebec), tambura (long-necked lute), tâpan (large double-headed drum), tarabuka (hourglass-shaped drum), and gajda (goatskin bagpipe). On occasion the group uses modern instruments (clarinet, violin, saxophone) as well. The a cappella pieces on this recording are traditional village songs.
