about

Dance song recorded by Yves Moreau in the village of Drenovo, in the southwestern corner of Bulgaria (Pirin region).

Selim has rounded up seventy young girls and seven young married women to reap a very big field. He led them out to the field and they started to reap. They had both breakfast and supper in the field.

A longer version of this song goes on to tell how Selim asks which of these beauties will marry him. Stojanka, the leader, looks him straight in the eye and says, “I will marry you, if you make me a shift from a hollyhock, and a saja (an outer garment) from a white rose!” He replies, “I will marry you, if you make me a banitsa (a savory dish made of thin-rolled dough and cheese) without flour and without oil, and bake it
without fire.”
