Two dance
songs from the Pirin region in southwestern Bulgaria.
a) Yane Sandanski (a famous freedom-fighter) set out for the Pirin Mountain, with his rifle and all his gear. He met a young shepherd, and asked him, “Haven't you seen my band of men?” “Ah, Yane, your band is already in the mountains, on the top of Pirin Mountain.”
b) Word came from Solun (Thessaloniki) that people had set up a gallows to hang Gotse Delčev (another famous freedom-fighter). What did Gotse do? He disguised himself as a black charcoal-burner and went straight to the marketplace! The market was filled with Turkish officers (the people who wanted to hang Gotse), who came to him and asked, “Old charcoal-burner, have y'seen Gotse Delcˇev?” “Ah, my fine officers, even if I had, I’d never recognize the man!”
